Both plant-like and prosthetic, Reaper continues Bellosguardo’s inquiry into biomorphic form and speculative futures through hybrid sculpture in stainless steel and silicone. Poised on three sharp points, the structure narrows into a stem that rises toward a seed-like form, seductive yet latent with danger. While initially appearing as a simulacrum of something natural, the work renders the botanical cold and machinic, stripping it of organic warmth and severing its connection to the natural world.
Steven Bellosguardo (b.1988, Adelaide) is a Melbourne-based sculptor who explores hybrid biomorphic forms that oscillate between the organic and the constructed, reflecting entangled relationships between human systems, non-human life and industrial inheritance. Working through labour-intensive processes, his assemblages draw on historical forms while producing speculative outcomes shaped by material experimentation. Bellosguardo hand-forms and welds metals, carves wax and wood, models clay, and casts silicone, aluminium and bronze, allowing each material to influence the forms and gestures of his sculptures. His practice emphasises persistence, failure, and the illusion of control, embracing the response of materials to chance, gravity, and process. His works merge fluidity with structural precision, balancing organic and synthetic elements in states of tension and interdependence.
