GILLIAN MARTIN
-
Gillian Martin's ceramics blend form and technique, with each piece carefully handcrafted and featuring graceful curves that invite exploration. Martin uses the traditional technique of terra sigillata, adding detailed stripes that highlight the shapes. The firing process in both gas and electric kilns adds unique colours and textures, creating a dynamic interaction between material and fire. This process connects her work to the rich history of pottery.
Inspired by the dynamic dance between emotions and the environment, each colour presents its own story—warm tones radiate energy, cool tones offer serenity, and contrasting hues spark dynamic tension. Her thrown organic forms embrace stripes of geometric precision, directing attention to shape and surface intricacies. This technique adds depth, highlights, and shadows to the forms, enhancing their realism and creating a sense of volume.
