The Widening Gyre
The Widening Gyre, sees Johnson explore the fluid and ever-changing state of being ‘in- between’. Like many of her works, the series takes inspiration from her mixed Chinese- Italian-Australian cultural heritage. In addition, they are further informed by her recently becoming a mother. Subtle and poetic each photograph captures the turning and (re)turning of the body in motion.
Each image features selected pieces of the subject: hair, a slither of her face, limbs or exposed flesh, surrounded by a sea of black. Evocative and alluring, they leave the viewer to ponder a meaning or narrative behind the work.
