Liminal
solo exhibition

Erika Gofton’s work is fundamentally about empathy. About how we respond and feel for another and in turn how we then connect to ourselves. She is especially interested in exploring the intersubjective relationship of mother and child, in particular that liminal state of adolescence; the heightened internal fear and anxiety of being close yet distant in the same breath. Her work sits somewhere precariously between the light and the dark, the beautiful and the ugly, the lucid and the ambiguous. The work is a catharsis, a way to confront the discomfort both through the image and the process. It has become the nadir, the threshold, the point of letting go. The mark has become both the conduit and the counsel.

Erika has held solo exhibitions in Melbourne, Sydney and Queensland and has exhibited in numerous groups and curated shows nationally and internationally. In 2012 she won the Toyota Community Spirit Travel Grant and undertook a residency in New York at Point B Worklodge, receiving a scholarship to complete the Drawing Marathon at The New York Studio School. She has been a finalist in the Adelaide Perry prize for Drawing, The Paul Guest prize for Drawing, the EMSLA, Sunshine Coast Art Prize, Mosman Art Prize, R & M McGivern Prize, twice in the Redland Art Prize, twice in the City of Albany Art Prize, winning peoples choice in 2012.

Erika has a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree and Post Graduate Diploma of Education. She is represented by Dickerson Gallery in Sydney and Anthea Polson in Queensland and is also the founder and Director of The Art Room, an art class, workshop and mentoring facility in Footscray.
