Here, there, and here again
Here, there, and here again is a group exhibition of new ceramic objects by artists Cura Wei, Goosullae Kim, Janice Wu, Pauline Meade and Thannie Phan (gốm maker).
The works are made in response to time. The makers all have slow, highly involved, methodical practices, informed by the repeated exercise of paying close and constant attention to the small, inconsequential questions that the work elicits and attempting to resolve them, one after the other.
For Here, there, and here again, the artists have crafted pourers, vases and sculptures that signify a library of their collected experiences. The vessels are finite containers of intimate memories, using clay as the primary medium, formed with traditional techniques and guided by contemporary surface treatments.
Thannie assembles her vessels by stacking excessively thin, pinched-out coils together. The works are almost weightless and retain the markings of each pinch on the clay.
Pauline hand-forms sculptural bowls using slab techniques. The bowl's surface is separated into sections using narrow strips of resist, then glaze and oxides are gradually layered onto each individual section.
Cura hand-builds sculptures that she interlines with her writings and scripts using layers of slips and oxides. Each piece is a documentary, a raw and experiential attempt at communicating her stories.
Goosullae often uses mark-making on her forms, intuitively and painterly, mainly on wheel-thrown bodies. Her vessels work as multi-dimensional canvases which she sculpts on the wheel and marks made with clay, slip, and oxides.
Janice’s work utilises slow, mindful hand-building techniques and repetitive mark-making to convey the relationship between the human condition and the natural world. Her sculptures are formed using a combination of coils and slabs, layering and dismantling until a final figure is revealed.
