Additional Info

On the ground, Vanessa Lucas finds objects that suggest shapes of vessels. She is endlessly fascinated by surfaces that have been washed smooth by the action of water and wind-smooth boulders, worn shells and rippled sand catch her eye. Shells and stones suggest the colour and texture of the glazes that she uses.

The inclusion of elements that echo aspects of the natural world in the design of Vanessa Lucas's functional vessels can provoke an emotional response to everyday objects. The experience of using utensils that evoke sensations beyond the immediate moment can enrich the simple tasks and pleasures of everyday routines

Hand-made pots offer both practical value and a connection to something deep within our daily lives. They are infused with the identity of those who make and use them. When utilitarian objects are valued as an intrinsic part of our habitual patterns the attachments that are formed are inclined to be long-lasting and can encourage sustainable attitudes

Aspects of coastal landscapes are incorporated into the forms and surfaces of the vessels Vanessa makes.
