Sandra Bowkett has always been a maker.
Building a wood firing kiln in 2013 has directed her current ceramic practice. The forms are pared down and decoration minimal to allow the fire to speak.
Bowkett strives to make simple useful objects, the reward is knowing something she has made is the object of choice, whether it be for a morning tea or coffee, meal bowl or flower vessel. At times Bowkett does gets distracted by material, form and what the fire may give.

Bowkett finds working with clay and woodfiring most satisfying. The act of sitting with the kiln from the tiny ignition flame to the yellow heat over fourteen hours mesmerising. The wait then of two days before unpacking the kiln shelf by shelf exciting. These reveals, and not always positive give rise to thoughts for the next firing, challenges that keep the fire of passion for this medium alive.
