"Ephemeral Painting" series extends from Alex Dillon's practice of collecting screengrabs from artist studio documentaries, which she then translates into paintings on small wooden blocks whilst listening to creators describe their methods. The durational series explores the visible, bodily, and spoken traces left behind in the process of making. This approach reflects Dillon's curiosity with contemporary studio practice and the cyclical nature of ideas & expression. Dillon's paintings are a result of an ongoing investigation into the language of documentary film. They begin with an act of excavation - Dillon isolates a single still frame from a moving image sequence. The paintings become a dialogue between portraiture, silent film and the slippage between stillness and movement.
