In this series of luminous, minimalist paintings Greg Wood presents an elusive landscape. Slivers of land are represented beneath heavy skies that threaten to consume the ground below. At first glance, the works could be mistaken for abstract, but the viewer is greatly rewarded by allowing the time to let the scene unfold. These sublime landscapes reveal the beauty of the overlooked, in-between places one passes between destinations and the works are surprisingly immersive given their modest size.

Although the scenes are loosely based on actual spaces, specificity of time and place is blurred through Wood’s treatment and process. He has a keen eye for the changes in weather and atmosphere and by relying on memory to translate the scenes, captures the unpredictability of nature, through subtle shifts in light and tone. One can’t help but feel insignificant in these expansive, unpopulated landscapes. Ultimately, the work encourages a restorative kind of introspection.
