With the advent of modern plumbing, the water jug has moved beyond a pragmatic tool and into the realms of lavishness or even novelty.

The clear marks left by this jug’s direct-making method underscore honesty, while the organic, monochrome, all-over pattern, references the humble everyday nature of historic spongeware (popular in Great Britain from the mid 18th century). Simultaneously “Jug with spots, comfortable handle, turbulent pour and minimal dribble” is a modern object of desire that, as the title suggests, doesn’t even work that well.
