Here, there, and here again
Here, there, and here again is a group exhibition of new ceramic objects by artists Cura Wei, Goosullae Kim, Janice Wu, Pauline Meade and Thannie Phan (gốm maker).
The works are made in response to time. The makers all have slow, highly involved, methodical practices, informed by the repeated exercise of paying close and constant attention to the small, inconsequential questions that the work elicits and attempting to resolve them, one after the other.
For “Here, there, and here again”, the artists have crafted pourers, vases and sculptures that signify a library of their collected experiences. The vessels are finite containers of intimate memories, using clay as the primary medium, formed with traditional techniques and guided by contemporary surface treatments.
Story from the artist
00232565 likes to collect things. Things like anything: rubbish, debris, lost items, shreds, threads, leftovers, fragments—I mean, anything.
Today, 00232565 found a bow tie, a red one, a bit worn out, looking like it came from a kid’s jacket. 00232565 took a sniff—it smelled like a clean wardrobe.
Later in the morning, 00232565 found a key. Maybe it belongs to a lock? Couldn’t remember, but still collected this key and kept thinking about that lock. 00232565 has been to many places. Where is the lock?
Sunlight is pouring out, almost too sharp. 00232565 runs into some unfinished words, here and there, scattered. 00232565 walks all over the corners and tries to collect as much as possible.
There are some places which have too many things: things expanding, things shrinking, things over things, things on top of things—really, too much.
In the end, 00232565 meets a shy guy. “Why are you feeling shy?” 00232565 asked.
“I feel loved,” says the shy guy.
00232565 closed their eyes and imagined the feeling. “I feel like I am evaporating. Maybe that’s how you feel too.” They smiled.
